Ferryhill Station Royal British Legion Branch is proud to announce the unveiling of a former Ferryhill Town Council Union Flag, generously donated to the Branch by Ronnie Evans, a 91‑year‑old veteran who served with both the Royal Army Medical Corps and the Durham Light Infantry.
The project to preserve and display this historic Union was coordinated by veteran Andy Denholm, former Branch Chair and now Branch Secretary. With the Branch holding its meetings at Ferryhill Community Sports and Social Club, and following consultation with Club Secretary Paul Mountford, it was agreed that the framed Union would be displayed at the Club for the community to appreciate.
The framing of the Union was made possible through a donation from Andy, with the frame itself crafted by Endeavour Woodcrafts, whose workmanship has been widely praised.
The unveiling took place today on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 27 June 2026, with Ronnie, Andy, Paul and Branch members in attendance.
Ronnie said: “I am overjoyed with the outcome. Thanks to Andy and the Branch for doing this. Excellent work by Endeavour, and I am very proud that this historic Union Flag now has pride of place here, near to the Town Hall and the meeting place of the Branch.”
Andy added that it was “a privilege to coordinate this project and finally see the historic Union on display — a flag that would have proudly flown over many Remembrance parades, and would have overlooked with honour the two War Memorials as well.”
Branch Chair Carole Atkinson expressed her thanks to Ronnie and Andy for their generous donations, and to Endeavour Woodcrafts for their excellent craftsmanship in producing such a beautiful frame.
The Branch is delighted that this important piece of Ferryhill’s civic and commemorative history will now be preserved and displayed for future generations.
