Durham County Council has inspected their light columns throughout the town ahead of the Town Councils Light Switch On event on Friday 28 November 2025. They have informed us that their columns cannot safely take any additional weight, and therefore the Town Council has been advised by Durham County Council not to install Christmas lights on their columns.
Although this is disappointing the Town Council Light Switch On event will still be a fun filled event with lots of activity, including a special Christmas Market in the Town Centre (Market Place) Car Park, which will include food vendors and seasonal drinks such as mulled wine and Hot Chocolate, as well offering the perfect opportunity to pick up Christmas Gifts.
The Christmas Market will also be joined by Children’s Show Rides. At 4.15pm there will be Carol Singing by children from local Schools, in the Town Hall garden. This will be followed by the official switch on of the Town’s Christmas Lights at 4.30pm, where our special addition polar bears will feature in the Town Hall garden.
