Spenny Striders was set up in October last year and has already built a strong and welcoming community of runners of all abilities, writes Ian Payne.
The group meets twice a week: on Mondays at 6pm outside Rosa Street Primary School for a relaxed 40-minute session and on Wednesdays at 6pm outside Spennymoor Town Hall, offering both a 3-mile and 5-mile group run.
The aim of the group is simple — to bring like-minded people together, regardless of pace or experience, in a friendly and supportive environment.
We now have over 300 followers on Facebook, with weekly sessions typically attracting 20–30 runners.
This week marks an exciting milestone for the club, as we take part in our first organised event — the Neptune Relays at Hardwick Park.
This is a well-known local event involving teams of four runners, each completing a 1.75 mile lap of the park.
We’re proud to have 7 teams entered, meaning 28 runners from Spenny Striders will be representing the town — a fantastic turnout and a great opportunity to showcase the group’s growth and community spirit.
If anyone is interested in joining us, they can find us on Facebook by searching Spenny Striders — we’re a friendly, welcoming group open to all abilities.
