Ferryhill artist, Derek Slater is having an exhibition of his paintings at Ushaw College, Durham from 25 January until 23 March 2025.
Derek started painting over 50 years ago after a hand injury prevented him from boxing competitively for Shildon Railways ABC.
After being made redundant by British Coal he completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree course at the University of Sunderland, after which he combined teaching art with painting.
Now retired, he paints full time, either mining scenes for which he has had a book published related to these paintings called The Coal Mine.
There are also some of his paintings in the Mining Art Gallery at Bishop Auckland, Spennymoor Art Gallery, and the mining institute at Newcastle.
His latest exhibition is called Time Changes Nothing, and addresses problems that man often repeats with ominous and catastrophic consequences.
The paintings being exhibited deal with wars, the effect of climate change, racism, homelessness, starvation and pollution.
