With the holiday season upon us, the August get together, on Wednesday 21 from 11am to 2pm at the Resthouse in Hackworth Park will just be a nice relaxed few hours of socialising, writes Glenn Gibson. Hopefully the weather will be lovely and everyone can enjoy the view.
There are no visitors booked in this month as most are on holiday, looking after children etc, but refreshments will still be available on the day.
Last month there were a number of announcements and speakers on various issues. Steve from South West Durham REME Association spoke about the potential of the Aycliffe Veterans Hub starting up again and the Bus Preservation Society open day.
Amy from Groundworks gave advice and information regarding energy costs and how to reduce. John from a local veterans charity gave a small presentation on what they are about.
Looking ahead to the coming months, Wellbeing for Life is supporting the group and will be making curry for the September and October meetings. Other food will be available as usual.
The proposed day trip to Eden Camp on 31 August has been cancelled due to lack of numbers. Some have already been, others just can’t make it and a group are away on their motorbikes at a rally.
However, Health Express, who were going to sponsor the free minibuses for the day have kindly offered to supply fish & chips at a meeting, likely to be November after the two curry days.
The Veterans Hub will be working with the Shildon Branch Royal British Legion to promote a sponsored sleep out in Hackworth Park, provisionally booked for Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 September. This will be to highlight homelessness amongst ex-forces personnel and to raise funds for the RBL so help can be given to veterans in need.
Anyone interested in taking part must register with the Shildon Branch RBL which meets in the Railway Institute on the second Tuesday of each month at 8pm.
