1st Ferryhill Scout Group held its Annual General Meeting recently and once the business matters were concluded, attention then focused on recognising the achievements of our volunteers.
Celebrating achievements is a key part of scouting.
Scouting has been a major part of Yvonne Edwards’ life, and she was surprised to be honoured for her many years of service to scouting.
Yvonne, (known to many as “Akela”) started her scouting service by becoming Cub leader in 2002 and has provided valuable skills and adventure to more than 200 children over the years.
Yvonne was given an ‘Award for Merit’ and a certificate from Claire Bake, District Commissioner for Bishop Auckland District Scouts. Malcolm Turnbull, Group Scout Leader presented her with an engraved gift on behalf of the group.
Stepping down from her role, she has many happy memories and cannot remember how many sleepovers and camps she has done, though she does say not much sleep was had on any of them!
“Working with children is very rewarding and if I have helped to shape one young person’s future then I have achieved something,” she said.
Also receiving an award was Donald Park for his 15 years as chair.
Speaking after presenting the awards, Claire said: “We are very proud of and grateful to the recipients for their many years of service to the 1st Ferryhill Scout Group and delighted that this has been recognised accordingly.
“Every adult who gives their time to scouting supports the development of young people and without them, scouting and the adventures it offers simply would not happen”.
The group is always looking for individuals prepared to give up some of their time to help either formally, through the warrant system, or informally as required from time to time.
