A new interactive display exploring the creative process behind ‘Steamsong’ has been officially launched at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon.
On 3rd July 1938, the A4 Class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new world steam record – a record that has never been broken by any other steam locomotive.
‘Steamsong’ is a multimedia opera specifically commissioned by the National Railway Museum and Durham County Council to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s record-breaking run. The work, supported by Arts Council England, was previewed at Locomotion during the Mallard 75 celebrations in February 2014, and premiered at the Gala Theatre, Durham, during BRASS: Durham International Festival 2014.
Written and directed by acclaimed composer John Kefala Kerr, ‘Steamsong’ is a poetic evocation of steam culture, its power and possibility. Evoking more than simple nostalgia, ‘Steamsong’ encourages audiences to consider the relationship between industry, national identity and social change.
The new interactive display in the Collection Building at Locomotion gives users entry into the creative process.
Locomotion is open daily from 10am to 4pm (winter opening hours).
