Spennymoor Town FC ended the season on a high with a deserved 2-0 victory over play-off qualifiers Chorley at a rapturous Brewery Field. However, the win alone was not enough as a complicated set of additional circumstances were required before the three points would be enough to take Moors into the play-offs.
At the final whistle, Moors fell short by a whisker, ending the season in tenth and just three points from the final play-off spot. Moors were handed a slice of luck when the referee wrongly adjudged Matt Urwin to have fouled Jordan Thewlis, with Glen Taylor converting the resulting spot-kick.
Mark Anderson netted his second goal of the campaign against The Magpies when he tapped in following Urwin’s save from Taylor in the second half. Speaking after the win, joint-manager Bernard Morley said: “It’s disappointment from mine and [Anthony Johnson’s] behalf in terms of where we finished in the league, but there’ll be other managers that think that.
“But ultimately, it’s all about next season now.”
After the match, fans were able to stay behind to enjoy the end of season awards ceremony with Joe Tait scooping the Managers’ Player of the Season, Supporters’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Club Player of the Season awards. Goal of the Season was awarded to Mark Anderson for his sublime curling strike from distance at Chorley in March.
