Dear Editor,
These photographs by Shildon’s Daniel Plews, were taken during the recent work to replace the roof of Magneco Metrel, the company currently occupying what was the Repair Shop at Shildon BREL Works.
Ground into the girder are the words:
G. W. Chapman
September 21st 1960
Silver Wedding

In the early 1960’s the Shildon Works underwent much redevelopment, including work to the Repair Shop. When the closure of the Works was announced in 1982, out of the 2460 staff at the site, over 1000 men were employed in the Repair Shop alone.
I am wondering through the Town Crier who G. W. Chapman is/was and their marriage, family and connection etc. to Shildon and the Railway Works was.
Yours Sincerely,
James Moffatt, former Shildon BREL employee
