Tucked away in Ferryhill is a growing community space that’s doing much more than planting vegetables.
The Humble Garden CIC is a local, not-for-profit community garden created to offer a welcoming, inclusive outdoor space where residents can connect, learn new skills and enjoy time in nature, no gardening experience required.
Founded by local resident Lucille, The Humble Garden CIC was set up in response to the growing need for accessible community spaces, particularly for people experiencing isolation, low confidence, anxiety or simply wanting to spend time outdoors with others.
“The garden is about people as much as plants,” says Lucille. “You don’t need to know anything about gardening. You can come along, have a chat, take part at your own pace or just enjoy being outside.”
The garden runs fully funded sessions, meaning activities are free to attend, and many include something to take home, from seeds to plants, helping people continue growing at home.
There is a range of relaxed Saturday morning sessions planned over February and March, all running from 10am–11am:

7 Feb – Garlic Day (take a growing bulb away)
14 Feb – First Seeds of Spring
21 Feb – Strawberry Day (take a free plant away)
28 Feb – Garden Tidy Up Day
March
7 Mar – Strawberry Day (take a free plant away)
14 Mar – Spring Seed Sowing Day
21 Mar – Cut Flowers Kick-Off Day
28 Mar – Spring Clean the Garden Day
These sessions are designed to be friendly and pressure-free, with people welcome to stay for the full hour or just pop in for a short while.
The garden includes areas for growing fruit and vegetables, cut flowers, wildlife-friendly planting and a polytunnel that allows activities to run in most weather. Sessions are suitable for adults, families and individuals looking for gentle social connection.
The project also works closely with local schools, home education groups and community organisations to ensure the space meets the needs of Ferryhill residents.
All sessions are fully funded, but places need to be booked in advance.
