When I was elected as a Durham County Councillor, I was made aware that the church faced possible closure. Although I looked at ways to save it, the finances needed were beyond my reach.
I therefore focused on saving the Church Hall (pictured) and protecting the groups that use it.
Over the past year, I’ve helped bring together 10 local volunteers who are now working through the legal process to take on the lease from the Church Committee. The aim is to create a sustainable, volunteer-led community building for Chilton, with more groups and activities while continuing to provide space for church services.
The group will not take any money for themselves and is working towards becoming a recognised charity and are trying to raise as much funds possible to get this going .
Once the lease is signed, they plan to launch a fundraising page called “Save the Church Hall” on gofundme.
Leaflets and questionnaires will be available at the Chilton Show and questionnaires will also be available online so residents can have their say.
Thanks go to Chilton residents who have already donated for the leaflets and questionnaires to be established.
A huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered, and to the church committee. I know this has been a stressful time. There are some exciting ideas ahead, and together we can help secure the future of the Church Hall for Chilton.
