Experience ‘India in Steam’ at Locomotion

India-in-Steam‘India in Steam’, an exhibition of black and white photographs by Ray Price, opens on Saturday 30th August at Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon.

The stunning exhibition documents Ray’s travels in India in 1982. Ray wanted to see where steam still ruled the world before it was too late. Travelling nearly 7,000 miles across India by rail, he visited engine sheds, depots, stations and whole railway towns. Ray saw first-hand a full scale steam railway in operation, met the people who worked it, and enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells.

‘India in Steam’ portrays that evocative journey, way of life, and time now passed. In doing so, it reveals the broader side of Indian railways which will appeal to a wider spectrum of people as well as rail and photography enthusiasts.

On the opening day, between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, visitors will be able to enjoy short dance performances by the vibrant, glamorous Bollywood Belles. The dance troupe are one of the UK’s leading Bollywood groups, and recently rocked the show at Middlesbrough Mela in front of 50,000 people. Their fully choreographed, high energy routines promise to leave audiences mesmerised.

Indian-themed art and crafts activities will also be available for younger visitors to enjoy throughout the day.

The ‘India in Steam’ exhibition will remain on display in the Collection Building at Locomotion until Sunday 5th October.
