Councillors visit local primary school

Cllrs Liz Maddison and Pete Molloy visited Middlestone Moor Primary School to see how parts of the Neighbourhood Budget had been used.

Two County Councillors recently visited one of the local schools they supported with their Neighbourhood Budget, to purchase a flagpole and Union flag to celebrate the year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee.

Spennymoor Division Independent Councillors, Pete Molloy and Liz Maddison, joined the Head Teacher and pupils of Middlestone Moor Primary School on Thursday 21 July, the last day of term, to see how well their new flagpole looked.

They were very pleased with the outcome, and brought with them a life size cardboard image of Her Majesty to entertain the children.

Cllr Molloy said, “This is the first time our country has had a monarch reach their Platinum Jubilee and we thought it would be quite fitting for the school to be able to honour Her Majesty in this way and decided to fund this project together.”

Cllr Maddison added, “The flagpole can also be used for educational purposes for the children when there are other events taking place and they can learn why a flag is flown for that particular event.”

Speaking about receiving their new flagpole and Union flag, Head Teacher Gemma Richardson said, “The children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The flagpole and flag will provide us with a lasting reminder of the Jubilee. It will also mean that we can raise a flag for other special events or occasions.”

Both Councillors also funded flagpoles and Union flags for Rosa Street Primary School and Whitworth Park Academy, and also used their Member Neighbourhood funding to support other schools and organisations in the parish to help them celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.
