Five students from the Chikara Dojo, based in Spennymoor, took part in the British So – Kyokushin karate full contact championships in Wales recently. From the five who competed, three returned home triumphant.
In the Cadet Knockdown 40-45kg 8-10yrs Jake Jackson won 3rd place. In the Cadet Knockdown 30-40kg Jack Murfet won 1st place and in the Lightweight Novice Knockdown Rainen Harper won 1st place.
“It’s always refreshing to see our students do so well, it’s great to see their hard work and dedication pay off and it gives me a great sense of pride, knowing that my teaching has helped them”, commented competitor and instructor Rainen Harper.
Instructors at the Chikara Dojo of Kyokushin Karate have been teaching full contact karate for the past 26 years and members always attend as many competitions as possible. They have travelled to many different countries to compete, including France, Greece, America and Japan.
The club offers mixed lessons (both adults and children together). The theory behind this is that kids learn better when they are with adults and it is more likely to be an adult who attacks a child in the street. “Children who train at our club learn how to handle themselves against bigger opponents. This gives them an advantage in a self-defence situation” commented instructor Kyle Corner.
