Community Safety workshops for youngsters

A successful scheme took place across all three Primary Schools in Shildon recently, when year 5 pupils engaged in a series of five workshops covering topics such as fire safety, alcohol, anti-social behaviour and the environment.

Members of Shildon Community Safety Group were very privileged to attend the various assemblies at the three schools, where the children who participated in the scheme all received a medal and certificate.

A spokesperson for the Community Safety Group commented, “We are very grateful to the schools for their co-operation and the opportunity to work with the children in this very valuable area of work.

“Our thanks also to our partners in this work; Durham County Council, County Durham Fire & Rescue Service and Shildon Police.”

Due to its success the group will be co-ordinating another programme of workshops with Year 5 pupils starting again in September 2013, when all youngsters will again receive a medal and certificate.

June 6th saw  the group hold its second Keep Fit, Keep Healthy, Keep Safe event at the town’s Methodist Church Hall.

Ninety-six local children attended, which is all of year 5 pupils from Timothy Hackworth, Thornhill and St John’s primary schools.
The youngsters took part in Zumba, self defence and healthy eating classes.

“It was a resounding successful and everyone enjoyed it immensely,” said a spokesperson.
