Sunday night, 16th June, saw the congregation of Saint John’s Church gather together to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Miss Gwen Couper.

Miss Couper, as she is known throughout the town, spent her lifelong teaching career in Shildon, shaping and inspiring generations of young people.

Teaching at, and becoming headmistress of, what was then the Council School’, a number of her former pupils attended the celebration, sharing their memories of a lady described as ‘one of the nice teachers’.

Eric Anderson shared memories of a happy school, whilst Barbara Hall talked of how Gwen had not only taught her but her children as well.

Pat Todd reminisced about the musical talent Miss Couper had shared, recalling playing the triangle and aspiring to the tambourine as the school children played and sang together.

Revd. David conducted a quiz during the evening and Gwen’s favourite hymns were enjoyed by all. As the evening drew to a close Revd. David summed up, talking about the way in which our community has been shaped by remarkable people like Gwen who quietly and humbly work hard, and inspire others.

Gwen responded by thanking everyone for a lovely evening, an evening which had been a well-guarded secret!
