Businesses show support for Women’s Refuge

saksSaks Bishop Auckland recently raised a commendable £1,000 for their chosen charity, the Women’s Refuge (Wear Valley Women’s Aid), after holding a hair and fashion show at Auckland Castle.

The Saks team who contributed to the fundraising activity included Pauline Smith, Zoe Taylor, Melissa Kelley, Gemma Richardson, Amy Dolphin, Catherine Nichol, Stevie Jo Sargesson, Jessica Peel & Katie Colling. Xtreme Dance Fuzion, Storm Menswear, Image Bridal & Prom Wear and JacD Dressers also helped at the event.

A spokesperson for the salon commented, “We chose to partner the local women’s refuge because two women are killed every week through domestic violence.

“We admire the work of the women’s refuge as they support women and children through a range of services including independent advocacy, refuge and community outreach.”

Staff at Hogan’s in the town also raised a fantastic £1,300 for the shelter.

The money was raised in memory of Susan Forster – mother of Lindsey Forster, Assistant Manager at the pub. Susan, from Coundon, was murdered by her partner three years ago. Manager Julie Adams, along with Lindsey and fellow staff member Emma Woods-Adams, presented Refuge staff with the donation.

Regulars at Hogan’s contributed in a variety of ways including a Northern Soul night, raffles, collection buckets and guess the number of sweets (donated by The Goodie Box in Bishop Auckland).

Hogan’s staff have also raised £425 for Henknowle Community Centre, £200 for Bishop Auckland Hospital Stroke Unit, £1,100 for Macmillan Nurses and £1,100 for the Air Ambulance. They will be fundraising for Spina Bifida next year.

A spokeswoman for the Refuge commented, “We are very grateful to all those who contributed, and especially to Julie at Hogan’s and Pauline at Saks. The money raised will directly benefit the women and children staying at the Refuge.”

Wear Valley Women’s Aid is a support service for women and children who have been subjected to domestic abuse.

The organisation encompasses advice and guidance, outreach support and Refuge-based services.
