On 14th and 15th October, lead instructor of Blade Taekwondo, Corey Wilson, and student athlete, Aiden Ward, competed at the biggest competition of the year, the British Taekwondo National Poomsae Championships in Worcester.
Corey, who leads the group based in Bishop Middleham Village Hall, trains and competes all year round. He was looking forward to putting in a good performance to showcase his skills.
Paired with Cara from Focus Scotland TKD, they made it to the finals of the Under 30s Pairs division, and an overall 7th position for the pair in a category of 16 pairs.
Later that day, Corey was set to compete again in the Under 30s Male Individual division.
Coming well within the finals margin and making the cut, he pulled off a 5th place position in the finals, just missing out on 4th by less than half a point.
Overwhelmed by the result after coming 5th out of 19 British players, Corey said it was his best result in all his years competing.
After the events of Saturday, Corey turned coach to athlete Aiden on the Sunday, whose first time competing in Nationals was set to be memorable.
Having practiced all day, Aiden made tweaks and improvements to prepare for competing against some of Britain’s best.
Just missing out on the finals, he and his coach, were very proud and satisfied with his performance.
Knowing what he needs to improve on, he was back to training again on Monday night’s session, taken by new assistant instructor, James Gent in Corey’s absence.
“I would like to say a huge thanks to James for taking all classes while we were away to keep others in training,” said Corey. “It was a weekend of many happy, and exciting memories.”
Blade Taekwondo is now getting ready to end the year big with both Halloween and Christmas events planned, as well as continuing training until the new year.
