Auckland Moors complete fundraising challenge

Chairman Lee Costello receives Cash for Kids grant award, together with U14 players Erin and Amalia.

Auckland Moors United FC recently received a grant award from a regional radio cash for kids sports challenge.

Cash for Kids is a grant-giving charity helping children across the UK, and the Sports Challenge initiative was designed to get more young people into sport.

The challenge runs for one month, from September to October, to raise as much money as possible.

Each organisation retains all the money they have raised, plus they get a chance to win additional cash prizes.

The club was one a few organisations within the region chosen to participate, raising as much as possible in the month-long challenge. This was achieved through various activities including a charity race night, cake sale and prize draws.

A total of over £3,805 was raised over the 30 days, with the club also winning an additional £500 prize for best fundraising idea of ball sitting, where players spent a weekend continuously looking after a football.

This required each person to keep the ball with them for over 60 hours, including eating, sleeping, travelling to their match fixture and other leisure activities, all with the ball.

Many of the balls were decorated by each participant and became characters over the weekend. Many wore hats and some even had their own hair!

A lot of people enjoyed supporting the challenge through participation or sponsorship and it’s hoped that some of the fundraisers learned ideas and skills to take forward into future activities.

The club would like to thank everyone that has been involved.

Chairman Lee Costello, receiving the grant award at a ceremony held at the Metro Radio Studios in Newcastle said: “This money will go back into our local community, to support the work we do with children and all the benefits that come with being engaged with sport. It will help continue to fund grassroots football within our local area, including the provision of kit and equipment”.
