Spennymoor Boxing Academy’s first show of the season lived up to its billing as one of the country’s top amateur boxing shows.
The club turned out its top fighters who couldn’t wait to show off their talent in the lion’s den of Spennymoor Leisure Centre Arena.
Spennymoor’s boxing fans turned out in force to support the club and the atmosphere was electric when Macie Davis of Spennymoor entered the ring for a skills contest against Daisey Davis of Newton Aycliffe.
In a cracking contest to open the show, both girls showed that they have the skills required to go to the very top in their sport.
Charlie Turnbull, Jayjay Blondell and Jensen Lee all looked like future champions in their respective contests.
First of the decision bouts saw Riley Lowery beaten on a very narrow split decision by William Welsh of Darlington BC.
Annie Miller of Spennymoor showed exceptional skill and determination with second round stoppage of Annika Pugh of Cleveland BC.
Liam Daley of Brandon BC beat Adrian Crane from Aspire BC of Sheffield in a unanimous points decision.
Pick of the junior bouts was Spennymoor BA’s Ellis Dixon against Jaamal Hussain of Middlesbrough BC.
The much fancied Hussain new he had been in a fight with Dixon being very unfortunate not to get the verdict.
Olly Dexter and Jake Birbeck for the home team both lost on very narrow points decisions against very strong opposition.
George Kirtley of Brandon BC beat Joe Smyth of Bilton Hall BC while in a barnstorming Super Heavyweight bout, Joe Pay of Spennymoor BA gave his all against Joe Hinchley of Greens BC.
Joe dropped his opponent heavily in the third round but was on the wrong end of a split decision.
Top of the bill saw a very skilful bout between Spennymoor’s Harry Olton and Adam Kirby of Houghton BC with Harry winning on a points decision.
Harry also received The Micky Hopper Memorial Trophy for best overall on the show and 400 fight fans went home very happy.
Director of coaching Robert Ellis said: “I am very proud of all of the fighters on the show and that the club proved it is certainly going places.”
The next day the club were on the road to Liverpool with Leon Nam competing in the quarter finals of the National Championships.
