500 Can Challenge exceeds expectations

Revd-David,-Paula-Nelson,-Councillor-Trish-Pemberton,-Shildon-Alive-volunteers-and-Ben-FarlowThey came from all over Shildon, from Saint John’s School, from local businesses, they were both young and old, and the Saint John’s 500 can challenge was met and then exceeded.

With a total of 809 tins of food collected, plus packets and bottles, the generosity of Shildon people couldn’t have been more evident at the food drive.

Sunday morning saw All Saint Scouts, Cubs and Beavers joining in the Harvest Festival service alongside over a hundred others of all ages.

Songs were sung and the young people presented a dramatic interpretation of a bible reading before sitting down to a lunch of homemade broth.

On Sunday night more cans were taken in as Café Church kicked-off without a single spare seat.

Local councillor Trish Pemberton commented that she could understand why people were coming back to Saint John’s. She said, “This is what church should be, a community of people caring about their town with a passion.”

Revd David shared some stories about the reasons why people find themselves in food poverty and thanked everyone for all their hard work.

Many of the volunteers from Shildon Alive! were present with six year-old Ben Farlow summing up the night when, gazing at the piles of food, he simply said “awesome”!
