World War One medal found and reunited

Andy Denholm and Tony Hewitt with the WW1 medal at Ferryhill War Memorial.

Local Metal Detectorist, Tony Hewitt recently found a World War One medal in a field close to Brunel Street, Dean Bank. Local historian, Andy Denholm was handed the rusty medal in an attempt to research who it was issued to.

After research and extensive cleaning, Andy identified the soldier as Thompson Robinson who formerly lived in Brunel Street. He also managed to trace the soldiers Great Niece, Angela.

Tony said, “Over the past two years, I have been metal detecting in and around the village. In that time, I’ve found items from the 1800s, to World War One and World War Two, along with pit tokens from the Dean and Chapter Colliery.

“I am grateful for all Andy’s help and hard work, and it’s brilliant he managed to trace the family and return the medal to them.

“Being a keen metal detectorist, I am currently looking for a new permission to use.”

If anyone can help, contact Tony via his Facebook page.
