Monthly Jazz raises Ghurka funds

The regular Jazz concerts take place at Ferryhill Masonic Hall on the first Tuesday of the month.

The monthly Custom House Big Band made a welcome return to Ferryhill Masonic Hall for the first Tuesday each month and they still do not charge for entry, writes Roger Bushnell.

The event was sparsely attended due to England playing football and the first event of the season. In spite of this, the generous people of Ferryhill donated £150 towards the Ghurka Welfare Trust (GWT) and this sum is to be matched by a patron of the event whose father also fought alongside these brave men during WWII, so he felt that to support the Ghurka Welfare Trust was a worthwhile cause.

Sincere thanks to those who donated on the evening.

Once a Ghurka who has served with the British Armed Forces retires, they receive a pension of £114 per month. As the overheads are extremely low for the GWT, most of this money will support the retirees and enable them to live a more enjoyable life.
