Last Wednesday, at around 4pm, Durham Constabulary received reports of three teenagers on a motorbike riding dangerously around the Ferryhill area without any helmets on. Officers from the Roads and Armed Policing Unit were dispatched and pursued the suspects through Ferryhill Station, Chilton and Kirk Merrington.
The bike was followed towards Ferryhill by PC Steve Hawman who directed colleagues with a stinger to the best location to intercept. The bike was stung and shortly after, the driver tried to bring it to a stop by purposefully crashing it into a lamppost.
All three suspects accused of being bike thieves, ran off and were pursued by officers on foot.
An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were subsequently detained and arrested on suspicion of theft.
The bike itself was also seized and confirmed as stolen. It will be returned to the owner. The bike thieves have since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.
