The Poppy Truck will be one of the attractions at the unveiling ceremony of A Field of Poppies - a commemoration to the fallen in the Great War.

The community of West St Luke’s Parishioners and Cornforth, Holy Trinity and friends and family will be paying their respects to the fallen who paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War One when their Poppy Nets project is finally revealed on Saturday, 14th October.

The nets contain 19,240 handmade poppies, representing the lives of British soldiers killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1st July 1st, 1916). Andy Denholm, army veteran and project co-ordinator said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support this project has received.

“So many people have been involved from as far afield as Canada, Bulgaria and Australia.

“Volunteers have shared their own stories on this journey, whilst knitting/crocheting in their memory.

“Animals lost in the war have also been remembered, with purple poppies being included in our tribute to the fallen, which is called A Field of Poppies.”

All are welcome to attend the unveiling ceremony, which will take place at 11am on Saturday 14th October at West Cornforth Church Hall.

“The ceremony will also host a visit from the Poppy Truck,” added Mr Denholm.

“Its cabin will be open for visits from children and adults, but children must be supervised.

“A donation bucket will be in place with donations to be split equally between the driver for costs towards fuel for the very long journey to join us at their own expense, with the other half going towards the Parish Church, so please give generously.”
