Aycliffe Fell Walking Club travelled to the western area of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park on Saturday 13 June for some challenging distance walking from Sutton Bank, Helmsley and Hawnby areas to Osmotherley, writes Andy Jakob.
However, the journey there was hampered by some significant delays caused by resurfacing roads and the mysterious absence of your intrepid reporter, resting at home after illness (get well soon! Ed).
That said, this is a very flexible and knowledgeable group and adjustments were made where necessary.
Some had decided to do a short circular (8.5 miles) from Osmotherley which involved some very steep steps out of the village but everyone made the right decisions for them and enjoyed the day.
I have heard several reports of groups of walkers wading through very long grass unable to see the path they were on.
This is where those with GPX technology stepped up confirming that they were indeed on the path – is just that recent changeable weather had turned it into a jungle!
Apparently by the time they had all reached the hospitality in Osmotherley, the mysterious absence of the one walker had been explained.
The next walk, on Saturday 11 July is in the Lake District National Park with a selection of walks based around the Grisedale Horseshoe between Glenridding and Patterdale.
