Bishop Auckland St. Mary’s Juniors FC held its annual presentation night on Saturday, 20th June, and had a fantastic turn-out for the event.
All 15 teams were present at the main hall of St. John’s School, which meant that the hall was fit to bursting with almost 1,000 players and parents over two sittings.
Organisers said the club had done ‘tremendously well’ over the course of the season, which was well reflected by the 14 cups on display and the 300 plus players who were presented with trophies.
The Teams of the Year were the Under 14A who won three cups, the Under 12B’s who went unbeaten all season, the Under 16’s who won two cups, as well as the Under 8’s, 9’s, 10A’s, 10B’s, 11’s, 12A’s and 14B’s who were all in receipt of cups.
Tony Davis, club chairman, opened the presentation night; the awards were presented by Rob Bowron, club secretary, and Colin Myers, Bishop Auckland FC manager.
Club representatives added that they are hoping to apply for permission to build a permanent clubhouse for next season, to replace the temporary accommodation where the club is currently based. St. Mary’s also hope to set up a new website, www.basmj.co.uk, and hope to field 20 teams, including 3 girls teams, rather than this season’s 15.
In other news, following their success at the recent St Mary’s Tournament, the under 9’s took part in the Mount Pleasant tournament held on Sunday, June 21st.
They won the first group game 2-0 against Newton Aycliffe Youth, with goals from Bailey Prudhoe and Josh Oyston. Next, they suffered their one and only defeat of the day to TIBS, losing 1-0.
In their next fixture, they drew 0-0 against Marton Hall Drive ‘A’ before winning against Gateshead Sapipa 3-0, with 2 goals from Cameron Gilbey and another from Josh Oyston. The last group game was a 1-0 win against Middleton Rangers with the goal coming from Bailey Prudhoe.
The quarter-final was against Nissan Celta and ended 0-0 even after extra time taking the game to penalties.
St Mary’s won 4-2 with Prudhoe, Bowes, Thompson and Dixon all hitting the net and keeper Jack Blacklock making 2 outstanding saves. The semi-final saw St. Mary’s pitted against Marton Hall Drive ‘B’ and another goal from Prudhoe was enough to secure a place in the final.
The final fixture was against 21St Allstars, which St Mary’s won 1-0 with a headed goal from Josh Oyston.
