Now into the third year, Shildon Alive’s Guerrilla Gardening programme is underway again.
With over 270 children already engaged, the programme will run through the summer encouraging children to care for their world.
Shildon Alive (A Saint John’s Church Project) is committed to seeing Shildon flourish and whether teaching children to care for the environment or delivering gifts at Christmas, the volunteers are determined to make a difference.
Led by Community Development Worker, Paula Nelson and supported by Shildon Town Council, the gardening has seen a reduction in vandalism to public flower beds and an increase in children engaging in growing things.
Rev’d David Tomlinson said: “This project is about teaching children that this is their town.
“No one is going to come with a pot of money and a magic wand to tidy things up, it is up to those of us who live here to care enough to make a difference.”
With all three primary schools and Byerley Road Pre-School now involved, hundreds more children have yet to have a go, so watch out for blooming times ahead.
