Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s new season got off to a cracking start with a convincing win over Whitby, in the Darlington Building Society North Yorks & South Durham Premier League Division Two.
Put in to bat, the visitors struggled against Shildon’s bowling attack, with Rob Nevison (5-15) and Jack Mensforth (2-16) to the fore.
The innings ended in the thirtieth over, as Whitby collapsed to 62 all out.
With one eye on the weather, skipper Greg Upton (31) was in no mood to hang about and the home side raced to the win in 7.5 overs for the loss of one wicket.
This Saturday the first team visit Newton Aycliffe whilst the second team start their league programme at home to Redcar. Both games start at 12.30pm.
On Bank Holiday Monday the first team are at home to Maltby with a 1.00pm start.
The junior fixture list has started but sadly the Under 11s game, last Sunday, was conceded when Shildon could not field a side.
“We held indoor practices at Sunnydale Leisure Centre and had a good turnout but due to the weather, only managed one outdoor session, said a disappointed spokesperson, adding, “We’ve contacted the schools and some individuals, as well as putting out information on our Facebook page but didn’t have enough numbers for the opening game.
“We’ve spent a fair bit of money hiring the halls and purchasing suitable equipment, as well as the time and effort put in.
“It would be a real shame to see this go to waste.
“Hopefully, more kids will turn up at this week’s practice, which is held every Friday evening from 6pm, and we’ll be able to sort out a side for the home match scheduled for Sunday 1st May against Etherley,” he added.
On Tuesday 3rd May the Under 15s are at home to Bishop Auckland at 6pm.
