On the second weekend in May, Scouts all over the world take to the hills to hike together, as part of the annual day for the World Scout Movement.
It is the only international annual event for every member of the Scouting family.
Called Jamboree On The Trail, all Scouts, whatever their age and wherever they may be in the world, are invited to participate in whatever way they can.
By doing so it is an opportunity to come together in spirit with Scouts all over the world and to promote the world-wide aspect of this growing movement.
For this year’s event, All Saint’s Scouts, Wolf Cubs and Beavers hiked the old disused rail trail from Shildon to Brusselton, at a pace allowing those taking part to observe the environment around them, and with time taken to stop and learn of our proud railway heritage.
The idea of an annual ‘hiking’ Jamboree originated in Canada, when some Canadian Scouts hiked the Trans Canada Trail in October 1997 and posted a trip report online, generating interest which led to the creation of the annual Jamboree On The Trail, the first official hike taking place on the 25th April 1998.
