Motorists are being reminded that parking restrictions are being enforced within the town.
Durham County Council take over responsibilty for enforcement on 31st May, and several warning notices have already been distributed in advance, particularly in Church Street.
Although the notices currently contain only a warning, from 3rd June anyone found contravening restrictions will receive a penalty charge notice.
Durham County Council say until that date, they are issuing warnings to raise awareness of the rules.
Adrian White, head of transport and contract services, said, “We hope that the advice and warnings will inform drivers who are unaware of parking restrictions in south Durham and help them avoid being issued with a penalty once we take responsibility for enforcement.”
Penalties will be issued for parking on single or double yellow lines, parking on a loading/unloading restriction, parking outside the markings of a bay, parking in a loading place during restricted hours without loading, parking on a taxi rank, bus stop or stand, and stopping on a pedestrian crossing or crossing area marked by a zig-zag.
