Northumberland walks

Thirty eight Aycliffe Fell Walking Club members took to the Northumberland Coast path for walks between Bamburgh and Alnmouth, writes Andy Jacob.

This has been a popular walk over the last few years and just goes to show that, although we are a “fell-walking club”, we don’t just walk the fells and annually include coastal and waterway walks in our walking calendar.

Nobody got off the coach at Bamburgh, but Seahouses attracted our stronger walkers with four more getting off at Embleton for an 11 mile walk to Alnmouth.

By far the most popular walks were the shorter walk options from Stamford and Longhoughton each with a brief country walk before reaching the coast.

The weather was perfect for walking and the cooling breeze masked the afternoon heat that would have been quite punishing as on the July walk.

Walking from Embleton meant we were straight down onto the coast with beautiful views of Dunstanburgh Castle before arriving at Craster and meeting up with those walking from Stamford who had decided to take an early lunch.

Some of these joined us as we pushed south towards Howick and Sugar Sands.

We deviated away from the path to a lovely rocky spot on beach level for a pleasing lunch-stop.

Like many of the AFWC walkers, we couldn’t resist the lure of the Fish Inn at Boulmer for some liquid refreshment before heading off for more in Alnmouth.

Everybody arrived back safely and with everyone back on the coach we set off 5 minutes early, which must be a first but very helpful for the driver.

We had a great day of fairly easy level walking with great views.

Our next outing is on September 12 when we travel to the Lake District and specifically from Rydal and Skelwith Bridge to Coniston.
There are high and low-level walk options from both start points with the lure for many (but not all) of the Coniston Fells.
