Despite a slight lull in the heatwave conditions around County Durham, it was full-on in the Lake District and a strong turn-out of 39 Aycliffe Fell Walking Club (AFWC) members headed towards the Glenridding and Patterdale area to walk the Grisedale Horseshoe amongst others, writes Andy Jakob.
Fortunately, this club offers many options on walk routes so although quite a few went all the way to the tops of Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike and Dollywagon Pike via Swirral Edge enjoying a cool breeze as they traversed the ridge, others set off with similar intentions but, due to the heat, decided to deviate from the higher peaks in favour of Grisedale Tarn and St. Sunday Crag. Other groups opted for a Place Fell circular or more lowland routes. Everybody had a great day out finishing in one or all of the three pubs and local cafes attracted others.
The next walk on Saturday August 8 is on the Northumberland Coastal Path with a selection of walks from Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell and Craster to Alnmouth.
