Aycliffe Fell Walking Club (AFWC) were in the Lake District for another wonderful walking day between the Kirkstone Pass Inn and Staveley, writes Andy Jakob.
Only three intrepid walkers risked the heights and strong winds whilst the others, including myself, enjoyed some more low-lying routes but not without some climbing. Lovely views made possible by the predicted bad weather staying away (it always does on AFWC days) and there was a bonus treat at lunchtime with some really tasty tea loaf made by one of the walkers.
In the afternoon, most of the walkers would have climbed over Orrest Head which apparently was the very first hill that Alfred Wainwright climbed on his first journey into the Lakes (although he probably did it from the other side). From there it was downhill into Staveley.
All of the walkers returned safely and enjoyed relaxing times in the Eagle and Child and Nooks Bar with both offering some excellent food and beers. Others chose the F & C option at the local chippy.
The next walk is in the Ripon area on November 14 when we will be walking routes between Sawley and Ripon and circular routes from Ripon along the Ripon Rowel Walk.
Aycliffe Fell Walking Club is a very friendly walking club. Please look at the website aycliffefellwalkingclub.com for further details or if you are interested in joining us.
Annual membership of £10 runs from January to December with each walk outing costing £15 to cover the cost of the coach. Feel free to join us on the next walk. We look forward to your interest.
