Year 6 children at Prince Bishops Community Primary School, Coundon Grange, were treated to a talk about the growth of foodbanks by Ernie Temple, a volunteer foodbank coordinator last week.
The children asked several questions about how foodbanks worked, what kind of food is donated and who the food helps, all questions that Ernie was happy to answer.
Foodbanks in Durham are operated by Durham Foodbank, one of many projects run by the Durham Christian Partnership. The proliferation of foodbanks has seen the number of distribution points in the region rise from just one in Durham City to 25 across the county.
The Prince Bishops children wanted to help raise some funds and made Christmas biscuits, which they sold, raising a total of £97.18. The money is to be donated to St Claire’s, Bishop Auckland and to Shildon Foodbank.
In addition, the children and staff took along food which was donated to the Newton Aycliffe distribution point.
