It was a perfect sunny day for a stroll as pupils from Cleves Cross Primary joined Archie, the Editor of the Ferryhill and Chilton Chapter, Sarah from The Northern Eco, Tia from Durham’s Police and Crime Commissioner’s office, Julie from Livin, PCSO Walbey, Glenys from Approach Too and local residents for a walk around the Cars Nature Reserve.
The event was part of Indie News Week, celebrating local journalism and community voices.
The group enjoyed the peaceful beauty of the reserve—birds chirping, the sun shining, and a refreshing breeze in the air.
But amid the tranquility, the distant hum of an off-road bike beyond the railway track served as a reminder of ongoing concerns about illegal riding in the area.
Sarah also pointed out an important spot: a field that acts as a buffer between the road and the nature reserve. Developers have shown interest in building on it, raising concerns about how that might affect the local environment. She even wrote a fantastic piece about it for the Ferryhill and Chilton Chapter, helping to spark conversations around the issue.
The walk was more than just a chance to enjoy nature—it was a way for the community to come together, celebrate independent journalism, and discuss the importance of preserving local spaces.
With thoughtful discussions, fresh air, and a sense of shared purpose, the event was a great reminder of how connected we all are to the places we call home.
