Students from Ferryhill School took part in an unforgettable trip to Iceland during the Easter holidays, combining education, adventure and cultural discovery.
A group of 40 students, accompanied by four members of staff, experienced some of the country’s most famous landmarks and natural wonders as part of the school’s commitment to providing enriching opportunities beyond the classroom.
The visit began with a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon. Ferryhill School students relaxed with silica face masks and enjoyed the unique geothermal setting. The group also sampled local food, including lunch at the popular Reykjavik Chips.
One of the highlights of the trip was a whale-watching excursion. Ferryhill School students were thrilled to see humpback, minke and harbour porpoise whales in the wild, an experience many described as “incredible”.
The group also took part in the FlyOver Iceland experience and watched a dramatic Lava Show, learning more about the country’s volcanic landscape. They then explored the famous Golden Circle, visiting Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall and the geothermal area of Geysir.
While in Reykjavik, Ferryhill School students visited Hallgrímskirkja, which stands at over 74.5 metres tall. The church, completed in 1986, is inspired by Iceland’s basalt lava columns.
The trip continued along the South Coast with a visit to Seljalandsfoss. Students and staff climbed 527 steps to the top and were rewarded with stunning views. The group also visited Vik and its famous black sand beach.
There was also time for sport, as Ferryhill School students attended a match between the England women’s national football team and the Iceland women’s national football team. England won 1–0 in a match played in a fantastic atmosphere.
Staff praised the students for their enthusiasm, behaviour and willingness to embrace new experiences throughout the trip, reflecting the positive values encouraged at Ferryhill School.
The visit was described as an outstanding success, giving students the opportunity to explore a unique environment, deepen their understanding of geography and culture, and create lasting memories with their peers.
