After a disappointing result in midweek in the league, Ferryhill Athletic breezed their way into the final of the Clem Smith Bowl with a resounding 5-0 victory over Consett AFC Reserves, reports Chris Orton.
Manager Lee Jewett rang a few changes in the starting line-up after the 3-0 away defeat to West Auckland Reserves on Thursday night – a game that had to be moved to the 3G pitch at Downhills in Sunderland due to the wet weather.
Adam Morland started on the bench and Chris Devine was given his chance up front. The Quinn brothers also returned to action.
It didn’t take long to chalk up the first goal, with Matthew Agar putting the ball into the opposition net after a goalmouth scramble. Athletic were playing well and should have had the game won in the first half, missing a number of chances.
Consett battled to get back into things, but barely troubled Harvey Gunn in the Athletic goal all game.
Ferryhill doubled their lead early in the second half with a fine strike by Agar, with substitute Morland getting the third soon after.
Consett were forced to bring on their reserve keeper due to injury, but it didn’t bring about a change of luck for them as Athletic made it four through Chris Dodds.
A spiritied Consett kept going, but never looked like scoring, and didn’t look like the opposition who defeated us recently in the league.
After a somewhat scrappy spell, Alex Quinn rounded off the victory by firing home into an empty net.
This will be the first cup final that Ferryhill Athletic has reached for over forty years.
Our opponents and the venue are still unknown, but it would be terrific to see as many Ferryhill fans coming along to the game as possible. What a boost it will be for the town!
However, first things first. Before the excitement of a cup final, we have a league game on Wednesday 13 March, as the Chapter goes to press, at Leyburn Grove in Houghton-le-Spring against Belmont United.
This is followed by a home match against New Durham on Saturday 16th March.
