A big thank you goes out to the community, local councillors, friends and family for joining us on our first Miners Welfare community clean up, writes Sue Reece, it was a great success!
Boosted by tea, cupcakes and banana bread, volunteers of all ages tackled the weeds, trimmed hedges, picked up litter and power washed paths and play parks.
The Minerโs Welfare fund was established in 1920 to be applied to purposes connected with the social wellbeing, recreation and conditions of living of workers in or about coal mines.
A committee to administer the fund – the Miners Welfare Committee – was established in 1925 and the conveyancing of land and assets for the purpose of the charity is dated 13 February 1934, entrusting the Recreation Grounds to the Town of Chilton.
As such it is deemed one of Chiltonโs historical assets and we are working to ensure that it is well maintained, restored to its former glory and is used by the Chilton Community to deliver the benefits the miners saved their hard-earned money to support.
If you have a few hours to spare, are interested in becoming a community volunteer, helping to look after the Minerโs Welfare Recreational fields, park and bowling pavilion, contact Hutton House or look out for posters advertising our next community volunteer sessions.
Come along to enjoy the open space, good company and of course, eat cake!
