Enthusiastic gardeners, allotment holders and others with green fingers are wanted to join a team of volunteers whose role is to promote home composting.
Durham County Council’s Strategic Waste Management Team is hoping to recruit new volunteers to its master composter scheme, which is aimed at raising awareness and knowledge about home composting in County Durham.
The scheme was set up in 2009 and the master composter volunteers work in their communities to encourage more people to compost at home and provide advice on how to get the best results.
Rachel Gatland, waste strategy and policy officer at Durham County Council, said: “There are many benefits of being a master composter. As well as making a positive contribution to the environment by helping to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill, volunteers get to meet like-minded people, learn new skills and work as part of a team.”
Volunteers must be County Durham residents and be aged over 18.
Free training is provided and new recruits are being invited to attend a training day to be held at Houghall College on Saturday, May 11 between 9am and 1pm.
