Veterans Hub Christmas Special

The Veterans Hub is having their Christmas Lunch at the Civic Hall in Shildon for their next meet up so will not be at the Resthouse in December, writes Glenn Gibson.

It is not too late to book a space but I will need final numbers by midday on Tuesday 17 December. If you are a veteran and would like to attend with your ‘significant other half’ please email me on g.gibson[@]shildon[.]gov[.]uk or call or text between 9am and 3pm (not weekends) on 07811 801 115, giving names and if possible your pre-order of preferred choice of food. The price per person is £24.95, however the Veterans Hub will be supplementing that cost by a minimum of £5 per person out of their limited funds to help. So, come along to a warm environment and enjoy the Christmas banter amongst other ex- Armed Forces personnel.

The Veterans Hub are getting a slight theme of being fed by organisations as in November’s get together an able supply of fish and chips were delivered to the group which was greatly received and devoured by all those who were there. Many thanks to County Cllr Rob Yorke and Health Express with Sarah’s Plaice Fish and Chip shop for providing this delicious food.

As we move into the New Year of 2025 the theme of being fed at the Veterans Hub continues when Wellbeing for Life will return in January and February with broth/stew and curry once again.

There seems to be a lot of new clubs in Shildon for local veterans to attend. Obviously, our own Veterans Hub that meets every 3rd Wednesday through the day, as well as the Royal British Legion–Shildon Branch which meets on the 2nd Tuesday evening at the Railway Institute and now there are new Building and Joinery classes for Veterans that have just started up in Dabble Duck Industrial Estate. On top of this the Masonic Hall are starting a weekly Veterans Breakfast Club from 9.30am commencing on Saturday 11 January.

With all these activities and clubs for local veterans, it would be a great idea if we could link and support each other for the benefit of veterans and those especially who may be in need. Even thought the Veterans Hub is a place to meet, eat and have a bit of craic, it is also there as a point of call for any veteran in need of help, where we can point them in the right direction to get it.

As mentioned in last month’s article, the hub will start fund raising for local projects in and around the area, so any support would be very grateful and hopefully working alongside the other veterans groups in Shildon and the surrounding area. As always, I will continue with thanks, to be given to those organisations who continue to support us month after month, Shildon Town Council, Shildon Alive & Health Express.
