The boys are back in town

Clare-Baron-(left)-and-Andrew-Ferrara-(right)-of-Auckland-Castle's-Curatorial-team-helps-manouvere-Asher-back-into-place-in-the-Long-Dining-Room1After nine months apart, Jacob and his 12 sons are enjoying hanging around together again at their Bishop Auckland home.

Levi and Asher had been out of the frame at Auckland Castle after being packed off on a tour of two of Europe’s cultural hotspots. But now the brothers are back in the picture after being welcomed back to their medieval stronghold.

Levi and Asher are two of Auckland Castle’s famous Zurbarán paintings, which have hung at the former home of the Bishops of Durham in a specially constructed gallery for nearly 260 years.

But since last September, the 13-strong family group on display in the Long Dining Room has been sorely depleted after Levi and Asher were loaned first to the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy, and latterly the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium, as part of a major international exhibition celebrating Zurbarán’s life and his place as one of the greatest interpreters of Baroque art.

A spokesperson for the castle commented, “It’s wonderful to have the boys back together again at their home here at Auckland Castle.

“The Zurbarán’s are not just national but international treasures and we are very fortunate to have them here in the North East.”
