A Church-led project in Shildon has awarded a grant of £2,500 to the town’s secondary school to help develop a sensory garden. The money for Sunnydale Community College has come from Saint John’s Church, which runs the Shildon Alive project.
Shildon Alive works to improve the health, confidence and skills of more than 2,000 local people through gardening and work experience. The church already provides two gardening spaces and Vicar, Revd David Tomlinson said, “The sensory garden at Sunnydale very much fits in with the aims of our project. It will create a good space for the pupils.
“We are always proud to develop partnerships which help the community flourish and we are delighted to support the school.
“Because we have a community gardening project the school welcomed our involvement.”
Teacher Yvonne Scott said the idea for a sensory garden project was suggested by year 7 pupils who had come up from feeder primary schools and requested a quiet area. “The pupils were very keen to put forward suggestions. We could not have been able to do this project without the grant from the church,” she said.
Headteacher Sue Byrne commented, “If it wasn’t for the church there wouldn’t be a project at all – we are very grateful for their support and generosity.”
