Dear Editor,

I am concerned about reports of rats in parts of Cockton Hill, including residential properties and back lanes. I have personally seen dead rats in a local back lane, and residents have reported rats entering their homes.

I would encourage everyone to help reduce the problem by:

  • Not throwing bread, leftover food or bird feed into streets, back lanes or open spaces.
  • Making sure bird feeders do not leave food scattered on the ground.
  • Keeping household waste in securely closed bins.
  • Reporting dumped rubbish and rat problems to Durham County Council.

Many people feed birds with good intentions. However, food left on the ground can attract rats and make an existing problem worse.

This is not about blaming anyone. It is about working together to keep Cockton Hill clean and reduce the risk of rats.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Yours sincerely,
Councillor Tom Redmond, Bishop Auckland Division
