Team effort drives Under 17s to victory

Bishop Auckland Under 17s Rugby Team’s 20-7 away win at Consett was built around an excellent team performance lead by new captain Jordan Wilson.

Bishops were in early dominance with forwards Gareth Morley, Jonathan Poulter and Shaun Hutchinson all making strong runs.

With strong rucking and excellent presentation of the ball, scrum half Tom Robinson was able to spread the ball to his back.

Bishops’ opening try came when full back Cameron Abbott collected a loose ball and glided through a number of defenders. From the breakdown, Bishops’ forwards drove forward and recycled the ball, with Griffiths and Wilson involved in a passing move which set Abbott up to finish off the move and score his try.

With the visitors in total control both in the forwards and backs, it wasn’t long before Griffiths was breaking through to score another Bishop try.

Griffiths passed to Foulger who scythed through the opposition defence and then he released Cooper to dash for the line to score. With all three conversions missed, Bishop led 15 – 0 at half time.

In the second half, Consett were able to apply more pressure on the visitors, but again strong and resilient defence from Bishops’ players thwarted all of Consett’s attacks.

Second row Poulter eventually forced his way over for a well deserved try to extend Bishops’ lead to 20 – 0.

Consett scored their only try which was converted, after some sustained pressure on Bishop’s line.

But it was Bishops’ who finished the stronger and recorded an excellent first victory of the season.
