The next public meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will take place on Monday, 28 September in Bishop Auckland Town Hall Theatre at 7.30pm when Gary Bankhead will address the Society on the topic ‘Roman Sunderland’.
Gary is an underwater archaeologist and Honorary Fellow in the Department of Archaeology at Durham University, specialising in small-finds research, riverine archaeology and community-led investigation.
He is the lead investigator of the community-driven project along the River Wear that has recently identified one of Sunderland’s most significant archaeological sites of the Roman whetstone-manufacturing complex.
His work has reshaped understanding of early industries in the region and extended the known chronology of activity along the Wear by more than five centuries.
His published work includes ‘Pilgrim Souvenirs, Devotional and Other Objects of Faith’ and copies may be available to purchase in the evening.
Entry is free to members. Visitors pay £3.00 on the door.
The public meeting will be preceded by the A.G.M. of the Society which will take place in the Laurel Room at 6.00pm.
Nominations have already been invited from members for the statutory officials without whom the Society will be unable to continue in its present form.
This will be an important meeting in which the future of the Society will be decided. All members are urged to attend.
