The tables were turned on a Shildon man more used to handing out awards than receiving them when he was recognised with a leading honour for his work with young people.
Over the years, Derrick Robinson has been an inspiration to many young people of Shildon and surrounding areas.
He formed the Children’s Amateur Youth Theatre Group, which was launched almost a quarter of a century ago, before developing Tearaways, another youth theatre group created to inspire and support young people to be creative and follow their ambitions.
Nominated by Joanne Hutchinson from livin Housing Association and put forward by the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership, Derrick received the Chairman’s Medal from the Chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr John Robinson JP, at a special ceremony held at County Hall last week.
At no cost to the children or their families, Derrick has created opportunities for young people to learn, be part of something positive, to express themselves and to show others what can be achieved.
Recognised for his passion in supporting young people, Derrick chairs Shildon Community and Young People’s Action Network – a partnership of youth agencies working together, and providing a range of opportunities for local young people.
Derrick is no stranger to awards ceremonies as he presides over the network’s own annual awards, recognising the achievements of Shildon’s young people.
Cllr Robinson, said: “This time Derrick has found the boot on the other foot and it’s about time, as this award is fully justified for everything he has done for the young people of Shildon.”
