South West Durham News (SWDN), the small, local and independent publisher of the Ferryhill
& Chilton Chapter, Shildon & District Town Crier, Spennymoor News and The Bishop Press, is embarking on an important journey to secure its future, and we invite everyone from our diverse community to be part of this effort.
For the past two decades, our four community newspapers have thrived primarily through advertising revenue, with some assistance from grants and government support during the Covid pandemic. However, in recent times, we’ve realised that relying solely on advertising isn’t enough to ensure our long-term survival.
Various factors have contributed to this challenge, including rising costs, economic fluctuations, and the emergence of new digital platforms like websites, podcasts and social media. While these digital avenues offer valuable information, we recognise that they may not reach everyone in our community, especially those who are isolated.
At SWDN, we remain committed to reaching every member of our community. For some, the local paper is their main link to the world just beyond their doorstep. To achieve this, we’re launching a multifaceted funding campaign that offers everyone the chance, not only to support us, but to participate.
Membership Scheme: Empowering Future Journalists
Last year, we introduced a Membership Scheme that allows readers to contribute just £2 per month, or more if they would like and can afford it, to support aspiring young local journalists. Members receive a special privilege – they get to read the latest issue of their local paper 24 hours before it’s delivered to homes, thanks to a PDF copy emailed directly to their inbox. The funds raised from the Membership Scheme will be dedicated to compensating local reporters for investigative reporting on issues that matter most to our communities. We believe in standing up for our communities when they need us the most, and this initiative reflects that commitment. These funds will also provide young talents in our community with mentorship and hands-on experience to nurture their journalism careers.
Sponsorship Opportunities for Businesses: Supporting Local News
We are extending our support network by offering sponsorship opportunities to businesses that may not require traditional advertising but recognise the value of local news in our community. For a small monthly fee, these businesses will have their names prominently displayed on the front page of all our papers.
Charities and Community Groups: Showcasing Your Impact
Local charities and community groups that benefit from our platform to showcase their work and promote fundraising activities now have the chance to make a low-cost contribution.
In return, we will proudly feature their names on the front page of every paper.
Open Invitation to Volunteers: Be a ‘Citizen Journalist’
We warmly welcome volunteers, or as we fondly call them, ‘citizen journalists.’ Whether you have a passion for unearthing local stories, capturing events through photography, dabbling in podcasting, video production, fundraising applications, or simply lending a hand in our day-to-day operations, there’s a place for you in our vibrant community news publisher.
Studies reveal that over 75% of people want to stay informed about what’s happening within a ten-mile radius of their homes. We are not just dedicated to providing this vital information; we consider it our duty to support and advocate for our communities when they need us most. Your support is the cornerstone of our ability to keep current and future generations informed and empowered. Join us in this shared mission to ensure our community thrives, stays informed, and stands strong together.
Together, we shape the future of our community news. Join us today!
