On Monday 11 July, as Shildon Alive were hosting an afternoon tea for Ukrainian refugees in their Church Street building, the charity received a surprise visit from Shildon AFC Supporters Club with a large donation of supplies for their food bank.
The local charity’s food support has been extremely busy helping more families in crisis than ever due to the soaring cost of living. The Supporters Club had heard that they were running short of supplies and decided to rise to the challenge. They went shopping to fill up the foodbank to help the team out.
Shildon Alive Project Coordinator, Paula Nelson said: “The staff and volunteers were overwhelmed by the kindness of the supporters club members. They really do care about their community and go above and beyond to support us.”
The day was also a chance for Ukrainians who have arrived in the local area, to make new friends.
In a comment on Facebook, the charity said: “We held an afternoon tea to connect with our new Ukrainian friends and let them know they have a place to call home with Shildon Alive. What a beautiful day.”
Many praised the idea, applauding the organisation for their thoughtful effort. One commenter said, “This is fabulous,” and another thanked Shildon Alive for their “fantastic gesture.”
