Dear Editor,
In about 1980/1982-ish, I was stranded in Ferryhill, or it may have been Chilton. The weather was horrendous with deep snow and the A1M was closed completely. Truck drivers like myself were diverted off on to the old road and parked up.
The local people were so kind and went out of their way to help. Truck drivers like myself were put up in a church or community hall and food was supplied with camp beds blankets etc.
I was put up in one of the residents’ houses with another driver. The lady of the house looked after us no end and I will never forget her kindness and generosity. I’m retired now and often think of that day.
The road was cleared about a day later and we were on our way.
To the villagers involved I say, after all these years, thank you so much to all the people who helped on that day and would be interested to know if anyone remembers that time.
